Your Computer is Broke - Phone Scam

Hello
I just wanted to share this with you as hopefully it might help someone

I was phoned this morning just as I was leaving for work by a company called Ceylon Technical Support who told me they worked for Microsoft and that Microsoft were trying to send me some updates and a programme on my computer was stopping them, and he could help me by connecting to my computer and sorting out all my problems.

I work in IT, so I was the wrong person for them to speak to - I told them in no uncertain terms to go away and never phone me again.

I looked them up on the internet and apparently it is the latest scam, they remotely access your computer, which they lock down, then tell you that you have a virus or a problem which they will fix at a high cost - http://www.zdnet.com/regulators-smash-global-phone-tech-support-scam-operation-7000005195/.

It make me furious as I can see so many people would be taken in with this - I also know that many of you are having problems with your computers at the moment and trust me this is not the answer.

Never click on any link in any email, have up to date antivirus, say no to any toolbars you are offered whilst browsing (they slow down your computer) and if your computer is playing up, turn it off and restart, you would be amazed how this fixes most problems.

  1. This happened to me!!!! My caller said that my computer was "refusing vital updates by Microsoft" that would "enhance security and improve stability". He said this refusal in a "clear sign that my computer has a virus" and he would be able to fix it for me if I granted him "remote access".

Yeah right! Basically, I told him where to get off!

We need to be a step ahead of these scammers. NEVER EVER hand over your computer to nameless faceless individuals. If RESTART doesn't work and you need technical assistance, take it to a proper service centre.

Thanks for the heads up, Suzie!

  4. It's really kind of you to take the time to put this on your blog Suzie - some of these scams are so convincing. The stuff that appears on the computer these days is appalling and these telephone calls would certainly get an extremely short answer from me!! Thanks again for putting a warning such as this on your blog!!

    Hugs to you Sue Pxxx

  7. Thanks so much for this information as I am sure it will prove invaluable to many people in this busy time.
Folks may just get distracted and frustrated by a naughty computer playing up ... but this should warn them of the dangers that are out there in the big wide internet world.
There is always some plonker willing to spoil it for the rest of us by showing us how clever they are at spreading a virus.
Beats me what pleasure they can get from it Merry Christmas xx
